Rock Revolution, Charlottesville’s newest bouldering gym, celebrated its grand opening on August 30. Owners Jessica and Mike Kinnick moved to the area in 2020 and quickly fell in love with the region’s access to outdoor adventures. “We spent many weekends hiking, camping, and biking, often visiting the New River Gorge with our daughters,” Mike shared. Inspired by their travels to climbing gyms and areas across the country, the Kinnicks envisioned creating a space that captured that energy and served as a community hub for climbers of all ages and skill levels.
Opening the gym during the summer was a strategic choice, allowing for a momentum boost with the onset of the fall season, when students from the nearby University of Virginia return to town. “This time is perfect for families, students, and newcomers to explore something different,” Mike explained, eager to welcome the community during a period that naturally promotes activity and connection. The summer timeline also provided the opportunity to train staff, launch founding memberships, and position Rock Revolution as a center for movement in Charlottesville.
“Through Rock Revolution, we aim to bring people together, celebrate movement, and foster personal growth while strengthening the local climbing community,” Mike stated. The Kinnicks chose Charlottesville for its active population, vibrant outdoor culture, and growing interest in climbing. They wanted to create a bouldering gym that welcomed both beginners and seasoned climbers.
Constructed within a 9,000-square-foot repurposed office building, Rock Revolution boasts 3,500 square feet of climbing wall surface, featuring 16-foot walls with circuit-style ratings and V-grades, as well as a Tension Board 2. The structure benefits from abundant natural light and high ceilings, allowing for a modern layout tailored to climbing. Retrofitting the building involved cutting out the floor between the first and second levels to create an open, dynamic space. The gym’s location offers potential for future expansion, including plans for top rope climbing and additional amenities.
Every aspect of Rock Revolution’s design focuses on fostering community, encouraging progression, and making climbing accessible for all. In addition to diverse climbing terrain and thoughtful route-setting, visitors can access strength training equipment, yoga, and fitness classes. Mike emphasized their dedication to connecting people through youth programs, adult leagues, wellness offerings, and community events. The gym also features a multi-purpose space for birthday parties, yoga classes, and local gatherings, along with a designated kids’ zone complete with top rope auto belay climbing, providing support for families and younger climbers alike.
