Lake Travis Bouldering is gearing up to open this spring in Bee Cave, Texas, just northwest of Austin. The gym is led by Rashell Backer, President, and Colin Backer, Director of Operations. The Backers ventured into this endeavor after successfully selling their cleaning business, established in 2016. “After searching for the right opportunity, it became clear that we could merge our passion for climbing with the vibrant Lake Travis community,” Colin explained. They recognized a growing demand for an indoor climbing gym in an area rich with health-conscious, adventure-seeking families.
The Backers secured a prime location for their gym, nestled in the heart of Lake Travis. Situated along the main highway, just a mile from Lake Travis High School and half a mile from the Hill Country Galleria, the facility offers ample space for bouldering and additional activities. Plans include an outdoor climbing boulder, a spacious deck for yoga, and a yard for games like cornhole, all with picturesque hill country views from atop the boulder. While the structure required several upgrades to accommodate increased occupancy, the Backers are eager to enhance the local climbing scene.
Recognizing Austin’s burgeoning climbing community and the enthusiasm for outdoor activities, they set out to establish the first climbing gym in the Lake Travis area, creating a welcoming space for local climbers.
Lake Travis Bouldering will feature an impressive 5,000 square feet of indoor space and another 4,000 square feet outdoors, with around 2,800 square feet dedicated to climbing terrain. Facilities will include a state-of-the-art 2024 Moon Board, a boulder cave, and the outdoor boulder. Additional amenities will comprise a weight training area equipped with strength training tools and hangboards, a room for birthday parties, and a large deck for yoga and other outdoor activities.
With its comprehensive offerings, Lake Travis Bouldering promises to be a valuable new destination for both seasoned climbers and newcomers alike, enriching the local community’s outdoor and adventure experience.
